I just received a brochure in a computing industry magazine I subscribe to for the new JVC XP7 mini note book, and I have to say it has gone straight to the top of my Christmas list! It is a lovely little notebook PC with an A5 form factor rather than the more normal A4 size. Sure there are some compromises, like the keyboard is a little smaller than normal, the screen is only 9 inches wide, and there is no built in CD / DVD player, but the weight is under 1kg which makes a big difference when you do a lot of travelling. If you compare this to my ageing Toshiba Portege (a solid and reliable lightweight portable), the XP7 is half the weight, but still the same screen resolution (1024 pixels), both have the same memory size, and neither have a built in CD / DVD, so I would not really be losing much at all. Personally, I can't see the point of having a 14 inch screen on a portable if you can only drive it at 1024 pixels - better to go with the smaller, lighter screen and plug in a monitor when you need the 1600x1200 hi-res.
I will have to send my letter to Santa Claus via our IT department, to see if my notebook is coming up for replacement soon.
