Luke Hutteman sent me a recommendation to try Jay Allen's MT-BlackList plugin as a mechanism for combating the recent comment-spam attacks.
I think I'll give it a try, before completely throwing in the towel on comments. It would be a shame to let the spammers win so easily.
Luke has also posted his own experiences regarding comment spam on his weblog, as have Ben and Mena Trott at Six Apart with some interesting follow on comment threads developing.
