Microsoft Offers $250,000 Reward for Information Leading to Conviction of MyDoom.B Perpetrators

Even if I didn't work for Microsoft, I would applauding this move! The anti virus software on my home e-mail machine has been groaning under the strain of filtering out this virus flying around various mailing lists and discussion groups in the last few days.

The steps to protecting yourself from this and other threats are pretty straight forward really:

  • Run Windows Update regularly to keep your system up to the latest patch level
  • Turn on Windows automatic update so you don't have to remember to do Windows Update yourself each time.
  • Install an anti-virus product which will scan all incoming and outgoing e-mails, as well as files on disk.
  • Make sure you run a firewall - even if you only connect with dialup, but especially if you have a broadband always-on connection.
