One of the things I was least expecting about my move to the USA, and the Pacific Northwest in particular, is the number of times we have had power failures. We had another one at 5am this morning, when heavy wind and rain brought down a tree along the road, blocking the road and cutting the power lines. That's 4 times in the last 4 months since we moved to our new house, if my maths (sic) is correct.
As Omri points out, being prepared for these eventualities, and building in sufficient redundancy is a bit of an art form.
I'm now eyeing up a generator, as power outages seem to an occupational hazard of living up a hill a little way out of town. Thankfully the house is pre-wired for a generator, which makes the task a whole lot simpler.
